A few years ago the BBC did a series on 20th century classical music called ‘The Sound and the Fury: A Century of Music’. One of the episodes included a genre of a type of music called sacred minimalism which drew my full attention. The documentary went on to highlight two sacred minimalist composers – Arvo Part, whose Christian faith and sacred compositions could of cost him his life in Soviet era Estonia, and John Tavener, who had enough of producing music that reflected the ugliness of the human condition and thought what people really need was to be lifted up.
Well, at times in my quiet time I used to tinker around with my guitar and pick around a single chord or a group of chords and just vary the notes slightly as I went along, not realising that I was effectively playing in a minimalism style. After watching the BBC series I felt motivated to have a go and produce a composition of my own. I then searched for a piece of scripture for people to reflect on whilst listening to it. That then led me to produce an animation which helped enhance the whole experience – giving birth to sounds with images.
I trust that you will be sufficiently lifted up and blessed by the compositions.
